LASER Vision Correction through ReLEx SMILE
27 Jan' 21

ReLEx SMILE is a result of the advancements in science and technology, to provide health seekers an incredible option to correct and better their vision.

Refractive correction of vision defects using laser technology has been firmly established as a method to enable patientsto have a comfortable life without glasses. The developments in recent years have been geared towards creating a treatment that is less risky for those suffering from vision defects and SMILE is a result of that. The micro-invasive SMILE(small incision lenticule extraction), involves the least possible interference, hence enabling the cornea to remain as intact as possible. The breakthrough lies in the fact that for the first time ever, ophthalmic surgeons have a refractive surgery procedure that provides maximum benefits for their patients with the least possible intervention.

As the cornea of the eye remains intact as much as possible, the predictability of the correction is very good. This allows physicians to feel a lot more confident and the results are clear proof of this. This blade-less technology is currently approved by NASA and the United States Navy.

The ReLex SMILE procedure is a bladeless, flapless procedure and only one femtosecond laser is used for the entire procedure. The treatment is delivered to the patient by creating a lenticule within the cornea, which is then extracted through a micro-incision on the cornea. The level of discomfort post procedure and potential dryness of the eye is reduced greatly. (A lenticule is a disc-shaped piece of corneal tissue or a piece of material manufactured to produce the required curvature and thickness. It is placed into or on top of the cornea.)

Advantages of ReLEx SMILE

1. Minimally invasive, flapless surgery – With ReLExSMILE, a lenticule and a small incision of 2-4 mm is created inside the intact cornea, enabling an 80 % smaller side-cut as compared to a LASIK flap. Furthermore, 30 % less cap cut is needed.

2. First SMILE solution – With ReLEx SMILE, ZEISS is at the forefront of the 3rd generation of laser vision correction, a procedure that is redefining refractive laser surgery as we know it.

3. ZEISS technology – High precision and quality, experience in optics and refractive surgery, ease of use and seamless integration are what ZEISS technology stands for.
