Keep an “EYE” on your New Year resolutions

New Year is here and you would have already made resolutions for the fresh start to be a healthier, happier and a successful YOU! But this year have you included eye and vision health in your resolutions? If not make sure to prioritize your eyes. Yes, make a resolution this 2017 to protect and preserve one of the most important sensory organs – your eyes.

Here are some of the most valuable tips that you can start doing now to keep your eyes healthy well beyond 2017. Here’s to your eye health!
  1. Schedule an appointment with your ophthalmologist: A comprehensive eye exam will not only ensure that your vision is at its best but also diagnose eye diseases that have no symptoms.  And remember, if vision problems are caught early, they are much easier to treat.
  2. Eat your way to healthier eyes: This New Year make it a point to include more eye-friendly foods in your diet. You have probably heard of the saying “you are what you eat”, and this holds true for your eyes too. So, to keep your eyes as healthy as they can be eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins E and C. Those foods include leafy green veggies, oily fish, citrus fruits and non-meat proteins that help fight off age-related vision problems.
  3. Wear protective eyewear: When you are at the outdoors don’t forget to wear your sunglasses. Sunglasses are not only pretty cool but also protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Get in the habit of wearing safety eyewear if you are engaged in work that poses danger to your eyes or when you play sports.
  4. Take a ‘screen’ break: Do you spend hours staring at your computer screen? Have you ever thought what this digital screen time does to your eyes? Staring at your computer screen for extended periods of time can cause a screen-induced discomfort called Computer eye syndrome. So make sure to position your monitor about an arm’s length away from your eyes. Blink often to moisten and refresh your eyes. Also, don’t forget to take frequent breaks by gazing out of the window or scanning the room for about 20 seconds.
  5. Drink more water: Those recommended eight glasses of water a day can definitely help to keep your eyes moist and nourished, which can aid in the prevention of dry eyes.
  6. Quit smoking: If you are a smoker, make a resolution to give up smoking for good in 2017. Smoking increases the chances of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Moreover, tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, is an irritant that contributes to dry eye syndrome.
Did you see the amazing sunset last evening? Did you watch your toddler take his tentative first steps? Yes, everyday our eyes capture countless breathtaking moments. Never, ever take your eyes for granted. Take time to think what makes all of that beauty possible – our eyes. Show your eyes your gratitude this New Year by fixing an appointment with S10 SafeCare certified eye clinic for a complete eye checkup!
