Dr G Buvaneswari, MBBS, DGO, DNB (O&G), Dip. ALS (Germany) Infertility Specialist & Laparoscopic Surgeon, at GBR Clinic- Fertility Centre, explains the importance of understanding the true purpose and need for fertility clinics. As several urban and rural couples are facing issues with sexual health and being unable to conceive, she addresses a few pertinent concerns on fertility.
Tell us about the purpose and functions of a fertility clinic.
A lot of people have a one-dimensional understanding of fertility. The primary purpose of a fertility clinic like GBR is to give health seekers a complete and thorough evaluation of their reproductive health. There are specific guidelines that fertility clinics follow before recommending treatments to the patient. Our focus is to provide counselling to understand one’s health, hormonal functions and the like and then identify if a problem –sexual or reproductive does exist.
How do you address the misconceptions that exist on fertility clinics?
The common misconceptions people have, are thinking that a fertility clinic should be visited only if you want to undergo IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) to conceive. Patients first have to meet with our team: a reproductive consultant, lifestyle doctors and counsellors etc. to clearly know their health. By working together with health apps like S10 Health we hope to create more awareness and educate health seekers on the exact role of fertility clinics.
What are the kinds of cases you see most commonly today?
More often it just simple issues that need to be fixed. People delay their visit to a fertility clinic and this is what makes it complicated sometimes. We offer mostly day-care procedures and patients can leave by the evening.
We are now seeing several patients anywhere between 38-42 years of age, who have had failed IVF procedures – a problem that has come from lack of proper counselling.
"Allow us to investigate and diagnose your issues on time. Please do not rush into IVF. The key reason for failed IVF procedures is the lack of proper evaluation. This causes implantation failures and miscalculated timing of embryo transfer. All this can be avoided by making an appointment for counselling at a fertility clinic."
Tell us about the more popular treatments offered at GBR Clinic.
We offer Laparoscopy, Hysteroscopy, IVF, IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination), LASER treatments, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), Assisted Reproductive Technology, Laser Assisted Hatching,
Freezing & Vitrification, Donor Programs, Surrogacy,Embryo Adoption and Male Infertility treatments. The ICSI Program we offer is the best here and has a success rate of over 80%. With personalised care, shorter waiting, lesser cost and higher success than other treatments, ICSI has gained wide acceptance.
A lot of fertility issues are caused by the drastic changes in the lifestyles of men and women. Could you elaborate?
In women we see an increase in the cases of PCOD (Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease), obesity and subsequent hormonal changes. Lack of sleep, proper diet and exercise, long hours of work are triggers that have changed the hormonal milieu. Other issues include endometriosis, tubal infections, pelvic tuberculosis, age, uterine fibroids, diabetes and hypothyroid. Women as young as 23-24 years have diabetes today.
In men, lifestyle changes have caused sexual dysfunction, lowered semen count, no sperm, lack of intimacy, premature ejaculation – all from having high levels of stress. There are many who have not even consummated their marriages after 1-4 years!
Male problems today dominate over women’s health issues in this regard.
How can one be equipped to handle this going forward?
Please do not delay your health check-ups, especially when you are trying to conceive. Also remember that a woman’s egg quality is lowered after 35 years. There are specialists who can perform simple corrective surgeries, so please don’t waste time in small clinics that are not equipped. Infertility is not a disease it is an inability which can be fixed by approaching a well-equipped centre with well qualified and experienced clinicians.
