Do you have a gummy smile?
27 Jan' 21

You caught it while looking at yourself in the mirror; in that photograph you took and then again in your reflection in the window. It is now very obvious that when you smile, your gums eclipse your upper teeth; making your smile more fleshy than flashy!

Your smile line constitutes the teeth that are seen when you smile, and this is determined by the size and shape of your lips, teeth and gum tissue and your facial muscles. An ideal smile line will show the least amount of gum tissue.

When you examine your smile further, you will realise that your upper teeth also seem shorter and less proportionate to the amount of gum tissue when you smile. This dental condition called gummy smile or excessive gingival display.

Gummy smile has an evident effect on the aesthetics of your beaming smile, and having excess gum tissue in one’s upper jaw could be a result of the unusual eruption of your teeth. Teeth that are covered by excess gum tissue look short, even though they are of the correct length.

A gummy smile occurs because the muscle controlling your upper lip movement may be hyperactive; making the gums rise up higher than normal, showing more gum tissue when you smile. The irregular development and growth pattern of your upper jaw bone and teeth could also result in a gummy smile that causes a painful or improper bite. Be sure to visit your doctor, for sometimes a gummy smile could be a sign of more serious hidden dental conditions that can affect your oral health in the long run.

Everyone wants a balanced smile line with uniform contours to be visible, as a great smile adds to your looks and confidence. Hence, it is understandable for a person to feel lacking in their looks and hesitant to smile when excess gum tissue takes over their pearly whites.

A gummy smile can be fixed with braces, Lip repositioning surgery, LASER treatments, Surgical Sculpting and some forms of Maxillofacial Surgery.
